Since we’ve been talking about bumblebees in our home preschool recently, it seemed only natural that we include a little something about pollination.
Especially now that spring is here and we’re already starting to see some bees in our own backyard.
This activity works well with both toddlers and preschoolers and is perfect for giving those fine motor skills a little extra practice.
For our activity, we made a quick honey comb out of paper shapes so that we could continue talking about hexagons as well but you could easily use two flowers as well.
To make a honey comb of your own, you’ll need:
- Sturdy paper (card stock or similar)
- Scissors
- Tape
Simply cut your card stock into 1 inch wide strips and fold them so that they make a 6 sided hexagon. Tape the ends together and you’re ready to go.
Once you have a few created, simply tape them together to make a honeycomb pattern.
Create yourselves a flower or two out of construction paper so that your “bee” will have a place to gather their pollen. This is a great way to work colors into your activity as you can create any type of flower you like.
Finally, grab a pair of tongs and some yellow pom poms to act as your pollen and set them out for your little “bee.”
Before you try this activity, find and read a couple of books about bees and how pollination helps plants grow.  We also used this as another opportunity to practice our counting skills as we moved the “pollen” from our flower and into the honeycomb.
This is such a simple activity that can be done any time and takes only a few minutes to set up but provides so many fun learning opportunities! Colors, shapes, fine motor, and counting all in one!
