When you’re homeschooling, especially if you’re teaching multiple children, space is a bit of a necessity. You need some room to spread out and learn!
But even if you’re short on space, you can still make it work! The key to homeschooling in a small space is finding ways to make things work in multiple ways and by making the most of every square inch that you do have.
And don’t panic! This isn’t nearly as hard as it sounds. In fact, with a little creativity, you can have a space at the kitchen table that meets all of your needs.
Get creative when setting up your space!
Before you ever start setting up pencil boxes and finding places to stash your books, make a list. What do you want to be able to accomplish in your homeschool space? What items do you absolutely need to make that happen?
Figure out beforehand just how much space you have so that you know what you’re working with from the beginning. Get rid of the things that you don’t need and find a few creative ways to store the supplies that you’re keeping that don’t take up a lot of space.
If your homeschool room consists of your dining room table, try organizing some supplies into a simple plastic set of storage drawers that you can set in a corner of the room and maybe even a few magazine holders on top. They’re great for holding workbooks, papers, and more!
Think portable!
Items that can easily be taken down and stored away are perfect for small space homeschooling! In our own home, we used to have an actual school room but found that our oldest has a much harder time concentrating with so much space and have since moved to the kitchen table.
While the move definitely helped him focus, it did cut down on the amount of space that we have to play with. With that in mind, I created a preschool calendar board that can easily be folded up and stored away when we’re not using it.
Tri-fold boards are a fantastic way to display maps, posters, and other hanging resources without taking up a lot of space.
Store just what you need!
In other words, don’t hoard school supplies :) This is definitely a lesson that I have had to learn more than once.
All of those brightly colored pencils, paints, notebooks, crayons, and books; they’re just so pretty and I have a serious addition to school supplies.
If you’re anything like me and may have a slight obsession with school supplies, try your best to pare it down. Working in a small space means making the most of every inch and if you’re storing hundreds of art supplies, you won’t have any room for anything else. Get what you absolutely need and no more!
Be flexible!
Probably the most important tip on the list! Be flexible.
If something isn’t working, don’t be afraid to change it up! Move things around and continue looking for those creative storage solutions that will help you make the most of your small space until you find the set up that works for both you and your child.
And don’t get too set on a set up just because you like it. It may look nice, but if it doesn’t work, rearrange until it does!
The beauty in homeschooling is that you don’t have to stick with the status quo. Make it work for you and your family and adjust as needed :)
