If you’ve taught toddlers or preschoolers for any length of time, you’ve probably covered a pet theme several times.
Animals of all shapes and sizes can capture the attention of young learners faster than most topics, but when you start talking about animals that can live in their homes, they’re hooked!
This is, of course, what makes this such a fantastic theme unit!
When they’re interested in a topic, children not only have a lot more fun, but they also retain a lot more information as well!
And with this printable dog house color matching activity, they’ll not only get the chance to learn more about the types of pets that people have, but they’ll also get the opportunity to work on their colors as well!
Printable Dog House Color Matching
My children, like most, absolutely love animals.
It doesn’t matter if they’re animals that would make a good pet or if they’re better left to the wild, they love them all equally.
Now, due to allergies in our household, we can’t bring home any feline friends, but dogs have never been a problem.
Our first dog joined our family a few years after our first child was born and the second followed a few years later.
These four-legged friends of ours shed like crazy, but our house and our family just wouldn’t be the same without them.
So, when I started putting together some pet-themed activities for my current preschooler, I knew that we had to honor the furriest members of our family.
Prepping the Dog House Color Matching Activity
Within the download file, you’ll find 12 color matching pairs, giving your little learners the opportunity to practice every color of the rainbow and then some!
Each matching pair contains one colored dog and one dog house in the same color.
All you have to do to prep these color matching pairs is print them off, cut them out, and run them through your laminator for durability.
Using the Dog House Color Matching Activity
When your pets and their colorful houses are all prepped, set them out for your toddlers or preschoolers and get ready to practice your colors!
Explain to your students that each dog needs help finding their house and that they can help them by matching the colors.
You could even have them practice naming each of the colors as they work to find the matching pair.
More Ways to Use this Activity
Hide Them Around the Room
Add a bit of a scavenger hunt element to this color matching activity by placing the colored dogs and their houses around the room for your students to find.
You, obviously, won’t want to hide them really, really well, especially if you’re working with younger children, but giving them the chance to get up and move while working on this activity is a lot of fun!
Turn Them into a Memory Matching Game
Print these pieces on thicker paper, like cardstock, and you can instantly turn this color matching activity into a pet-themed memory matching game!
Just lay them out, upside down, on a table or the floor, and have your students take turns flipping them over to find the matching pairs.
When you’re all done with these activities, use this fun printable to jumpstart the rest of your pet theme unit by talking about the fact that a house, or shelter, is just one of the things that pets need to live happy and healthy lives!
