When we first start teaching toddlers and preschoolers to count, we don’t really think too much about the fact that this basic math skill will be vitally important later on.
In reality, it’s the foundation on which the rest of their math skills will be built, so mastering it is critical.
Fortunately though, it’s an incredibly easy skill to practice and one that most children will practice on their own once they get the hang of it.
With the ability to count their fingers, their toys, and even cars on the street, it’s also a skill that can be practiced without any special tools or manipulatives.
But, on the off chance that you’d like to make it a little more fun for them this holiday season, these Christmas cookie counting flashlight cards are sure to be a hit!
Practicing Math Skills with Flashlight Cards
While these cookie counting flashlight cards are perfect for the holiday season, they’re also a fantastic way to work on a number of different math skills as well!
Your toddlers and preschoolers will, of course, have the opportunity to work on counting from 0 to 10, but they’ll also work on things like one-to-one correspondence as well as they count each of the cookies in Santa’s belly and realize that each number represents a certain number of cookies.
Counting Christmas Cookies
Counting, on its own, can be a lot of fun for little learners, but counting cookies is even better!
And when given the opportunity to count Christmas cookies, it pretty much makes it the best day ever!
But we decided to take that idea of counting Christmas cookies a step further with these flashlight cards.
You see, Santa’s already eaten these Christmas cookies and its your students’ job to figure out just how many cookies he’s eaten!
But with those Christmas goodies already being in Santa’s belly, they’ll need a flashlight to find them!
Like the rest of our flashlight card sets, they’ll use shadows and light to find and count the sweets in Santa’s stomach.
Using the Christmas Cookie Counting Flashlight Cards
Prepping these counting cards is super easy and just like the rest of our flashlight card sets, so if you’ve used them before, you’re ahead of the game!
To print them so they’ll work properly, change your printer settings to print on both sides of the paper and flip on the long edge.
Then, simply cut them out, run them through your laminator for durability, and grab a flashlight!
Looking at the front of the card, you’ll see a Santa Clause with a big, fully belly, but when you look at the front of the card while shining your flashlight at the back, you’ll get to see all of the Christmas cookies that he’s eaten!
And if your kids are anything like mine, they’ll spend hours playing with these cards without ever realizing that they’re working on those important math skills!
