When creating with your kids, salt dough is such a fun and versatile medium. You really can make just about anything you can imagine.
We absolutely loved using it to create our hand print Santa keepsake ornaments for Christmas and decided to use it again to come up with a fun, last minute Easter activity.
Easter egg puzzles!
Creating them is super simple and the kids had a blast decorating their own but the real fun begins once the paint is dry and you start piecing your eggs together.
We decorated ours so that each puzzle was painted with a single design but you could easily mix and match your puzzle pieces to create some fun and crazy eggs!
To make these beauties, you’ll first need to make your salt dough.
You’ll need:
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1/4 cup water
Mix all of your ingredients together until you have a nice firm dough. Roll it out to about a quarter of an inch thick and cut out a basic egg shape.
If you’ve got an egg shaped cookie cutter, that would work perfectly. Unfortunately, we could not seem to find one so we just printed off an egg shaped template on to card stock and used a butter knife to cut our shapes.
Next, just use that same butter knife to cut your puzzle pieces. Get creative!
When placing them on your baking sheet, place the pieces a inch or 2 apart so that they if they expand while drying out in the oven, they don’t stick together.
Also, adjust the temperature and time in the oven if need be. With our ornaments, 3 hours at 200° worked well however, since these were thinner, we put them in at 175° for just over 2 hours and they came out perfect.
Just remember when working with salt dough, you’re not trying to cook them, that will cause them to puff up and expand. You’re only using the oven the speed up the process of drying them out :)
Once your pieces are completely cool, you’re ready to paint!
Any type of acrylic paint will work and the kids will have a blast designing their own Easter puzzles!
