Are flash cards effective?

Personally, I think that flash cards, when used correctly, are incredibly effective!

Flash cards have gotten a bad rap over the last several years for being the boring track to memorization and honestly, if they’re used on their own with the sole purpose being memorizing vast amounts of information, then I would have to agree with their critics.

But, if they make up just one small part of your learning and are paired with plenty of other hands-on activities, they can be a very effective learning tool for your students and these color flash cards are the perfect example of that!

We have used these printable crayons so many times to practice and review our colors, but every single time looks vastly different than the last.

In the past, for example, we’ve gone on some fun color scavenger hunts, both indoors and out, to find things that match our crayon color cards.

We’ve also used them to help us sort manipulatives and small toys like LEGO by color.

There are, of course, lots of math ideas for incorporating these cards, but you can also use them to work on other subjects as well!

Work on those pre-k literacy skills by having your students pick out the letters that they know in the color words or swap over to science and let them use the cards to help them describe things they may be observing.

The sky really is the limit, so while you can always use them on their own for quick review sessions, using them as part of larger hands-on activities will really help your students retain far more information.
