Snow, snow, snow! Snow is so much fun, especially for those of us who live in warm climates and don’t get it every winter like our friends in the north. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t bring it into your classroom!
Although no artificial snow is as breathtaking as the real thing, it can be fun to play with and makes for a great sensory experience. This is why it also works so well for handwriting practice!
Just pair some snow-themed letter cards with a bin full of snow and you’ve got a winter-themed writing experience that your students are going to love!
Sensory Snow Writing
With these fun snow globe letters and this fantastic instant snow from Amazon, you can create a magical snowy literacy center for your preschoolers!
Simply print out the cards, cut, and laminate for durability. Add some of the snow to a shallow tray (cookie trays work perfectly) and allow easy access to the letter cards.
Learners can practice forming either upper or lowercase letters, or you can mix them up and have them practice both at the same time!
Sensory Play
Little learners are like sponges – they soak up knowledge eagerly and learn new skills every day. Because of this, it can be so important to incorporate their whole body and all their senses in learning.
Sensory play is crucial to their development as it allows them to explore the world around them and can help to regulate emotions.
Incorporating different temperatures, textures, weight, and smell in sensory play is a great way to mix things up. Feel free to experiment with your artificial snow and add in other sensory aspects such as:
- Essential oils mixed in to add scent
- Chill the snow for a real-life cooling effect
- Food coloring to add an aesthetic appeal
- Add in some white rice to add another texture to the mix
There are many ways to enhance the sensory experience for students, so have fun! Your learners will want to continue practicing their letter formation with this fun new aspect!
