All the nursery rhymes that we grew up listening to have a purpose. From a young age, parents and teachers have been using rhymes to teach the ins and outs of our language.
Rhyming words help students to learn the sounds within the words that we use. It also increases their cognitive development by improving their thinking and memorization skills.
Why Rhymes?
Why not? They’re fun!
Winter-themed rhymes are super fun! Rhymes help us bring emotion into the words that we speak and write. It’s all about the repetition of sounds and learning the rhythm of our language.
Rhyming words help children make the connection that many words have the same sounds. When they start writing they can see that our words also share common letters and that they fit into word families. Rhyming words are just another building block on the foundation of teaching young readers.
Winter Rhyming Match-Up
For this digital activity, students will need to match the rhyming word in picture form to the winter word that can be found on the frozen sign also in picture form.
These digital activities are so easy to set up in the classroom or to send home for virtual learning. Boom and Google are both self-correcting, so students will know right away if they got the answer right. Seesaw users will have to drag the checkmark over the correct picture. Keep in mind that Seesaw is not self-correcting, so students won’t know if they got the answer right until the end of the activity
With this winter-themed activity, children can enjoy learning rhyming words, even if most kids find it difficult. If you do have students who are struggling, just stay consistent, and make it fun.
