With Thanksgiving over and December just around the corer, it’s time to start preparing for the rest of the holiday season!
And if you’re looking for some fun ideas to help the kids prepare, then this paper chain snowman is perfect for you!
It’s such a simple twist on your typical paper chain countdown, but it’s sure to delight your kids and keep the repetitive questions of how many days until Christmas at bay.
This really is one of the best ideas that we’ve come up with for counting down the days until Christmas because it’s such an easy Christmas craft to make and the kids absolutely love ripping off the paper rings.
And it’s really as simple as that!
Every day, starting December 1st, you remove one link from the chain until you’re left with nothing but the original snowman on Christmas day.
And if you have multiple children that would like to participate in the countdown to Christmas, that’s just as easy!
You could either have them take turns ripping off rings, or considering how quick and easy this fun craft is to make, you could have them each make their own snowman paper chain Christmas countdown.
Making the Snowman Christmas Countdown
To make your own paper chain snowman, you’ll need some basic craft supplies:
- 2 cardboard tubes
- Glue or tape
- Black and white paper (construction paper works perfectly for this fun project)
- Scissors
First, cut both of your small cardboard tubes in half so that you have four rings that are roughly the same size.
Then, you’ll cut through one side of three of those rings so that you can open them.
Take the three rings that you cut open and cover the outside of them with your white paper. You’ll cover the final cardboard ring with the black construction paper.
These cardboard rings will make the base of your chain and will give the cute snowman that sits at the top a little bit of added durability.
Now, once you have all four of your cardboard rings covered, you’ll cut a circle from the remaining black construction paper and glue it to your black ring to make the hat for your snowman.
Then, you’ll need to use some tape to attach your white rings together to form the beginning of your paper chain.
Now, making a paper chain is a great way for little kids to work on their fine motor skills and they’ll love their Christmas project even more when they’ve made it themselves, but these cardboard rings are quite a bit thicker than paper, so they’ll probably need a little help with this part.
Once the parts of your paper snowman are made, grab some markers or some black and orange paper and give your snowman a face as well as a few buttons before using some glue or tape to attach the hat.
Finally, once your snowman base is finished, it’s time to start adding the paper strips that will represent the days in your countdown.
You’ll need one paper link for each day of your countdown.
When you’ve finished the whole chain, attach the plain white chain to the bottom white ring of your snowman if you haven’t already and hang him up!
Right next to the Christmas tree is a fantastic place for him as they both make fabulous Christmas decorations. You could even add another snowman craft or two to really get into the Christmas spirit!
Then, you’ll simply remove a link each day until you reach your snowman.
When he’s all that’s left, it’s time for a very merry Christmas!
