Over the past few weeks, my oldest has really taken an interest in finding words that rhyme.
From simply finding words that rhyme with shoe while getting ready to go outside to making up his own silly songs that are full of rhyming words, it has become somewhat of a game for us recently.
Since he has enjoyed it so much, I figured that we could find a way to combine that with some of the winter themed activities we’ve been filling our days with lately and from there, we ended up with a fun winter rhyming match up game that he has spent the past few days playing over and over again.
He loves it because he can find the words that rhyme over and over again and even tries to think of more words that rhyme with the set, and I love it because it is helping him work on those necessary early reading skills that he’ll need later on.
Being able to rhyme teaches your child a multitude of skills.
Not only does it allow them to prepare for reading by helping them break their words into smaller sections and actually hear the sounds being made, it also exposes them to the rhythm of language while introducing them to the patterns and structures of words, both written and spoken.
Practicing and then mastering these skills gets them one step closer to being able to read and makes the whole process of getting there that much easier.
With these winter themed rhyming cards, you can also make it fun!
They’re easy to use and pretty low-prep. Just print them off and cut them out.
The download includes 10 rhyming pairs, so 20 cards total, and make a great indoor activity for those days when it’s just too cold to venture outside.
