We love building with blocks around here.
From big wooden blocks all the way down to pattern blocks, there’s just something so satisfying about building something piece by piece.
So, when we first started introducing sight words, it seemed like a good idea to try to combine the two to see if we could make learning those sight words just a little bit more interesting.
And we weren’t disappointed at all!
These printable sight word pattern block mats took our newest literacy concept and turned it into a whole lot of fun!
Building with Pattern Blocks
Pattern blocks are one of our all-time favorite manipulatives!
We use them to work on colors and shapes.
We’ve used them to create pictures for different seasons and holidays.
We’ve even made some of our own out of craft foam so that we could build with them in water!
But, up to this point, we’ve primarily used them for math-related activities.
Well, not anymore!
With these sight word pattern block mats, we can extend the use of one of our favorite manipulatives to the literacy center!
Building Sight Words
We’ve recently come up with a number of fun ways to work on various sight words.
From dabbing them with Do-A-Dot markers to coloring them as part of a giant Summer-themed color by code, we’re definitely getting some good practice in, but the pattern block mats are still going to come out on top as one of my personal favorites.
They are so easy to prep and your students are going to absolutely love them!
And they’ll have plenty to practice as this set includes all 40 sight words on the Dolch pre-primer list!

To prep them for your kids, all you’ll have to do is print them off, run them through your laminator, and set them out with some pattern blocks in your literacy center!
It really doesn’t get any easier than that!
