This month’s experiment included creating energy and a clock out of fruit.
Can a couple of lemons really power a light bulb or a clock?
It turns out they can!
StemBox Lemon Battery Experiment
With StemBox, you’ll have everything you need but the lemons delivered right to your door.
- Alligator Clips
- LED Light Bulbs
- Gloves
- Safety Goggles
- Zinc Nails
- Copper Wire
- 4 Lemons
To start, you’ll need to roll your lemons on a hard surface to release the juice that’s inside. The kids are going to have a blast with this.
One thing that we learned with the first lemon is that you don’t want to press them too hard when you roll or you’ll end up with a lemon that leaks all over the place as soon as you start inserting the nails.
Place one of the nails and one piece of the copper wire in opposite sides of each lemon and repeat with all 4 of your lemons.
Using the provided alligator clips, connect the Zinc nail of one lemon to the copper wire of another, making 3 connections between the lemons and leaving one copper wire and one nail empty.
For the last connection, place one alligator clip on the empty copper wire and a separate clip on the nail.
Separate the ends of an LED light bulb and connect those two alligator clips.
Finally, turn off the lights and watch what happens to the light bulb!
Also included in this month’s StemBox is a fruit clock that you can use with your lemons (or various other types of fruit). Who knew you could produce so much energy with a few pieces of fruit?!
