It’s Monday and you know what that means?! It’s time for Kids in the Kitchen!
Actually, if you can believe it, the final week of Kids in the Kitchen.
This week is all about kid creations and although Nicholas is still a bit young to be making up entire recipes all on his own, he did decide that he wanted something green and orange :)
So, with Halloween right around the corner, we decided to make some fun (and spooky) Halloween treats!
These were so much fun to make and they’d be a perfect Halloween party snack!
To make these beauties, you’re going to need to take this recipe and multiply it by 3. The amounts of ingredients listed will make you one layer, or one color, but you could multiply it and create as many different colored layers as you’d like!
You’ll need:
5 tsp. Butter
2 cups Small Marshmallows
3 cups Rice Krispie cereal
Food Coloring
Add your butter and your marshmallows to a saucepan and on medium heat (ADULTS ONLY), stir until your marshmallows are completely melted.
Once they’re melted, go ahead and turn the heat off and add your food coloring. You’ll want to do this step quickly since the marshmallow will start to thicken as soon as it begins to cool.
Add in food coloring until you get a slightly darker shade than you would like your Rice Krispie treats to be. Once you mix in the cereal, the color will lighten a bit.
Have your cereal measured out in a separate bowl and as soon as your food coloring is completely mixed in, pour your marshmallow mixture into your cereal and have your child help you stir until it is all mixed together and all of the cereal is colored.
Your mixture is going to start setting up so transfer it to a 9×13 greased pan and press it into the pan. Your child can help you with this if you give them a lightly buttered spatula (this keeps it from sticking to your treats).
Now, repeat this process until you have your desired number of layers or colors. We decided on green, black, and orange for our Halloween treats but you could easily adapt this to any number of holidays or colors.
Once you have all of your layers, set the pan aside for 15-20 minutes and allow your treats to cool enough for you to cut them.
Once they’re cool, all you have left to do is enjoy!
