For most children, learning their colors is the easy part.
It’s the color words that can be a bit tricky.
Practice, as with any other skill, is key and this fishy color words file folder game gives you a quick and easy way to work on 11 different color words while also utilizing those fine motor skills!
With this game, you won’t just work on a basic set of five or six colors. No, your child will get the opportunity to practice 11 different color words including:
- red
- orange
- yellow
- green
- blue
- purple
- pink
- black
- white
- gray
- brown
Assembling the Fishy Color Words Game
This game is a ton of fun for little learners and thankfully, the entire things comes together in just a few minutes.
First, you’ll need:
- A manila file folder
- Scissors
- Clear contact paper
- Laminator (optional)
- Velcro dots
- The fishy color words printable (below)
After you’ve printed them out, cut out the colored fish and the various fish tanks.
Run the colored fish through your laminator and stick a Velcro dot to the back of each one. It doesn’t matter which side of the Velcro that you use as long as you use the same side (either hook or loop) on all of the fish.
Next, use some clear contact paper to attach the game’s cover to the front of the folder and use a bit more to attach the fish tanks to the inside flaps.
Finally, attach the opposite Velcro dots to each one of the fish tanks and get ready to play!
Using the Fishy Color Words Game
When your game is finished, give your child the colored fish and explain to them that each one needs to find its home.
These fish can’t live in just any old fish tank. They can only live in the one made especially for them and that one will have their color word written on it.
Have them match the fish to the color words until all 11 have found their home.
When they’re done, store your pieces by attaching a small plastic baggie to the back of your folder using some clear packing tape. Just stick the loose pieces in the bag and you’ll be able to take it with you when you’re on the go!
