Whether you’re working with your own kindergartner or a classroom full of them, watching them turn into full-blown readers is so exciting!
They start their journey by learning the letters of the alphabet and then move straight into learning the sounds that those letters make.
Once they’ve mastered their letter sounds, they’ll start the work of learning to blend them together to make words.
This transition from letter sounds to actual words is exciting because it’s where they get their first real taste of being able to read, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s easy.
In fact, some kids really struggle with this part of the process.
So, how do you make it easier for them?
Start with CVC words and find ways to make it fun!
Printable literacy centers like this set of CVC S’Mores, for example, are perfect for that!
They’ll allow your students to get some serious CVC practice in and really, what kid doesn’t love making S’Mores?
What are CVC Words?
CVC words are simple words made up of three letters: a consonant, a vowel, and another consonant.
Words like bed, rug, fan, and log are all examples of CVC words.
These short words follow basic phonics rules, meaning each of the letters makes their sound and the vowels in CVC words are all short vowel sounds.
Since short vowels are typically the vowel sounds that children learn first, CVC words are much easier for them to figure out.
Using CVC words filled with sounds that they know makes learning to blend those sounds so much easier instantly turns them into basic readers!
This not only starts you both off on the right foot but gives them a nice confidence boost when they need it most!
CVC S’Mores Literacy Center
This simple literacy center is not just a lot of fun, it’s also perfect for teaching CVC words to those brand new readers!
They’ll be able to see each of the letters that make up each CVC word and they’ll see a picture for each word as well.
This is especially helpful for new readers as it allows them to create a link between the image and the letters that work together to build the word.

Making CVC S’Mores
Gather around the campfire and get ready to make some S’Mores!
Show your students how to build a CVC S’More and then, let them go!
For each S’More that they want to make, they’ll need two graham crackers, a square of chocolate, and a marshmallow, just like the real thing!
On the first graham cracker, they’ll find a picture.
On the chocolate, the marshmallow, and the final graham cracker, they’ll find the letters that they need to build the CVC word.
They’ll stack the pieces in the correct order (picture on top) to build their CVC S’Mores.
When they finish making one, they can move onto the next one.
By the time they’re done making S’Mores, they’ll have mastered more than 60 CVC words!
