It seems that at one point or another, nearly every single child is fascinated by large trucks.
Whether they’re semi-trucks or big construction trucks, these huge machines have a way of capturing their attention and their imaginations.
Fortunately, this obsession can be used to incorporate some early math skills into your preschooler’s day and this printable construction truck size sorting activity can help you do it!
A fantastic way to introduce the concept of big and little objects, this construction truck size sorting activity is also a great way to work on sorting, grouping, and even counting!
Construction Size Sorting
This printable sorting activity includes two printable construction sorting mats and 12 different truck cards.
These truck cards include six different construction trucks in two different sizes.
Simply cut out the cards and the sorting mats, run them through your laminator for a little added durability, and they’re ready to sort!
What are Sorting Mats?
Sorting mats like these are not only super easy to put together for just about any theme you can think of, but they’re an excellent way to practice early math skills like counting, sorting, and grouping as children will use them to practice grouping like objects.
Typically, they include a few mats, one for each group, and several cards that will need to be sorted.
They can be used to sort objects by color, number, size, or any number of characteristics and can include as many different groups as you’d like.
Using the Construction Size Sorting Mats
Once the pieces are prepped, simply explain to the child that they will be sorting the construction trucks into two groups.
The first group is for those trucks that are big and the second is for those that small.
Have them work their way through the various truck cards until they have correctly sorted each of the construction trucks.
If this is one of the first times that you’ve introduced the concept of sorting to them, try starting out with just a few of the truck cards so that you don’t overwhelm them. Once they’ve mastered these, extend the learning with a construction-themed alphabet file folder game!
