Getting kids excited about writing can be tricky sometimes, but with the holiday season coming up, these Christmas writing prompts are sure to help!
Now, as every teacher knows, the holiday season is pretty much pure chaos.
Every child in your classroom is excited. They’re excited about Santa Claus and Christmas gifts. They’re just down right excited about the whole Christmas season and productive days in the classroom become harder and harder to come by as the holiday gets closer.
But these themed writing prompts make it easier than ever to get and keep your students engaged because they’ll get to write all about the things that they’re already so excited about.
And they’ll not only get to work on their writing skills, but they’ll also have the chance to work on concepts like sequencing, scissor skills, and vocabulary as well!
Sequencing a Story
Most writing prompts give your students a starting point and send them on their way.
This is fine if you’re working with older students who have more writing practice under their belts, but if you’re working with younger students, like kindergarteners, who are just beginning to write on their own, it’s helpful to have something that gives them a little more guidance.
This is typically why, when teaching kindergarteners to craft a story, we teach that there needs to be a sequence, an order that makes their story make sense.
First, next, then, and last.
This gives them a very simple set of steps to follow and is a great way to help them craft a perfect piece of writing and these printable holiday writing prompts provides them with exactly that!
Christmas Writing Prompts
Each one of these Christmas themed writing prompts contains two separate pages.
The first page gives your student their writing prompt. There are three different ones included in this set.
- How to Make a Gingerbread Man
- How to Decorate Christmas Cookies
- How to Decorate a Christmas Tree
This page also includes pictures fitting the prompt for your students to color, lines that they’ll cut when they’re done coloring, and the words first, next, then, and last to help them sequence the steps included in their writing.
The second page gives them lines for their writing.
To use them, your students will glue the first page onto the second along the left hand side of the page.
Then, they’ll need to cut along the dotted lines found on the first page.
When that’s all done, they’re ready to write!
Just have them lift each of the flaps to write out the steps that they think are required to complete each of the Christmas activities.
