When I think of the back to school season, the first thing that comes to mind is school supplies.
Now, I’ve always been a bit obsessed with new school supplies, especially backpacks, but that obsession definitely seems to be growing now that I have kids of my own.
There’s just something about filling a brand new backpack with books and school supplies that actually makes it feel like the back to school season has officially begun.
As we prepare for our own first day of school this year, one of my all-time favorite school supplies became the inspiration for today’s back to school alphabet matching activity.
Whether you’re currently working on the upper or lowercase letters of the alphabet, this backpack letter matching activity will work for you.
The printable set includes all 26 uppercase letters of the alphabet on brightly colored backpacks and then 52 notebook paper alphabet cards (both upper and lowercase letters) that you can match to your backpacks.
If your child has just started learning their letters, start out using the uppercase alphabet cards so that they can simply practice recognizing the letters.
If they’re ready to move on or you’re simply looking to review, mix it up.
Swap out the alphabet cards for the lowercase version or put them all together and have them work on finding all 26 matching sets.
This back to school letter matching activity would make a fantastic literacy center for kindergartners and is super easy to put together.
After you have the pieces printed out, cut them out and run them through your laminator so they’ll stand up to little hands.
Once that’s done, all you’ll need to do is grab a baggie or plastic container to store your pieces in until you’re ready to use them.
Personally, we love these basic pencil boxes! They’re easy enough for kids to open on their own and perfect for storing lots of different centers.
