One of the hardest parts of making an alphabet book with your preschooler is deciding on a craft to make for each letter. There have been some that were super easy of course, some that we knew what we wanted to make well before we even reached that point in our book.
Others however, were a bit more difficult.
Trying to figure out what we wanted to make for the uppercase letter U for example, took us a little bit longer than most.
In the end we decided to go with a unicycle and to be honest, I think it turned out pretty great!
This construction paper alphabet craft only requires a few sheets of paper and doesn’t require a ton of crazy shaped pieces, so it’s perfect for preschoolers that are working on their scissor skills.
To make your own unicycle craft, you’ll need:
- A sheet of white card stock
- Red, blue, and black construction paper (we went with light blue, but use whatever colors you have on hand)
- Scissors
- Glue
We’ll start this craft just like we start all of our others, by cutting out the pieces.
From the light blue construction paper, you’ll need the uppercase letter U, four skinny rectangles (about 3 inches or so long), and two small rectangles. From the black, cut a 3 inch circle and two rectangles. One of the black rectangles will need to be longer than the other.
Finally, from the red, cut a single small circle.
To assemble your unicycle, start by gluing your long black rectangle onto your sheet of card stock. You’ll want this to be closer to the bottom of the page while still leaving some room for the wheel.
Next, it’s time to make the wheel.
Grab your black circle and cut the middle out. Make sure that you leave enough room around the edges to glue the spokes.
To add spokes to your wheel, take your four blue rectangles and and glue them on in a star pattern.
Finish the wheel off by trimming off any blue excess around the edges of the black circle and then flipping the whole thing over and gluing your red circle right onto the center of the front.
When it’s completely assembled, glue it onto the bottom of your large black rectangle that is attached to your card stock.
On the other end of your black rectangle, create the seat for your unicycle by gluing on the uppercase letter U.
Finish your one-wheeled wonder off by gluing your shorter black rectangle cross ways (like a t) onto the middle of your longer rectangle. Add one of your small blue rectangles to each side to act as pedals and you’re all done!
The only thing left to do at this point is grab the uppercase U printable page from the bundle of interactive alphabet pages, complete it, and add them both to your alphabet book!
