We’ve practiced basic addition with an acorn-themed file folder game so it only made sense that we practice basic subtraction the same way as well.
Whether you’re just starting to introduce subtraction or you’re looking for something to help you practice those skills, this fall-themed file folder game is a fantastic tool to help you master them.
Put them both together and you’ll be able to work on sums to 10 and with the addition of this acorn subtraction file folder game, subtraction within 10 as well.
Adding both to your collection of file folder games means that you’ll be able to work on basic addition and subtraction all fall long!
Assembling the Acorn Subtraction Game
Of course, putting this together is pretty much the same as putting the addition version together as this one also uses acorn puzzle pieces to work on simple math equations.
To start, gather up your supplies. You’ll need:
- A manila file folder
- Scissors
- Laminator (optional)
- Clear contact paper
- Velcro dots
- The printable acorn subtraction pieces (below)
Cut out each of the acorn puzzles pieces and separate them. The top half should have the equation printed on them and the bottom half should have the answer for each equation.
Run the answer pieces through your laminator so they’ll stand up to being pulled off the Velcro and attach the top half of each puzzle to the inside of your folder using some clear contact paper.
You’ll use some more of this contact paper to attach the cover to the front of your folder.
If you’re having trouble getting the cover to stay in place long enough to lay the contact paper over top, try using a little bit of double-sided tape attached to the back of the cover. This should hold it still long enough for you to cover it with the contact paper.
When you’re done attaching your pieces to the folder, add one side of the Velcro the bottom of each puzzle, just below the top piece.
Attach the opposite Velcro dots to the backs of each of your bottom pieces and you’re ready to play!
Using the Acorn Subtraction Game
Make storing the acorn puzzle pieces easy until you’re ready to use them by attaching a small plastic baggie to the back of your folder using some clear packing tape.
When you’re ready to use the game, simply pull out the pieces and have your child practice their subtraction within 10 skills to figure out each of the equations. Once they’ve got their answer, have them finish the puzzle by finding and adding the correct answer piece.
