Over the past few weeks, while still somewhat warm, the temperatures in our area have started to drop.
We’re no longer seeing the triple digit days of summer and before too long, we’ll be welcoming the colder days of winter.
With the 4 year old’s Autism and sensory issues however, this change is a difficult one. Now used to the shorts and light t-shirts he has been able to wear all summer long, transitioning over to long sleeve shirts that sometimes have tags, jeans, and other outerwear tends to throw him for a loop and he still has trouble making the distinction between what is appropriate for the current season and what is not.
With that in mind, I created a fun summer and winter clothing sort printable that would give us a chance to discuss appropriate attire while also work on his fine motor skills in the form of a cut and paste activity.
With these fun clothing pieces, we were able to work on what is proper attire for each season while talking about those pieces were the most appropriate. Seeing them in picture form I think helped him to identify what the differences were and why one was better for certain weather than another.
These were also a fantastic fine motor work out as well as a great way to practice scissor skills!
Within the download itself, you will find three pages. The first contains multiple pictures of individual clothing pieces that belong in either warm or cold weather.
The other two pages are labeled with summer and winter and have plenty of space for your preschooler to paste their clothing options on them.
Once they’ve cut out their pieces and have sorted them into their appropriate season, go ahead and have them glue them on! For this particular activity, we chose to just use a glue stick, but if your child is just starting out with glue, use regular school glue and use this as an opportunity to practice the “dots not lots” mantra.
Hopefully, they’ll gain some excellent skill practice and you won’t have to fight with them every time they want to wear shorts in December :)
