If there is one thing I have learned from working with preschoolers and now, homeschooling my own preschooler, it is that they love, more than anything else, to learn all about themselves.
Their birthdays, their favorite colors, they love talking and teaching those around them, everything about themselves. And that, is precisely what made this All About Me book so much fun to make!
Even if they’re technically not in the reading stage just yet, creating a book that is all about them is such a fun way to get your preschooler excited about learning! In fact, make sure they’re completely involved! Ask them what they want to include in their book, let them draw the pictures, have them help you write it!
To make one of your own, you’ll only need a few things.
- Construction paper (white and a color of your child’s choice)
- Pen
- Crayons
- Scissors (We love these for little ones that are just starting to use scissors!)
- Ribbon

To get started, give your child the colored sheet of construction paper and have them trace around their hand so that you have a template with which you’ll create the rest of the pages for your book.
Once you have your child’s hand print cut out, grab your white construction paper and trace around your child’s hand print to create the inside pages of your book. This would obviously work with however many pages you would like to make but try to cut out at least three or four so that there are at least a few fun pages in their book.
Next up, talk to your preschooler and figure out what all they want to include in their book and have them draw those on to their white book pages.
Once they’ve gotten a few of their pictures drawn, go ahead and write on the pages so that you have a way to “read” your child’s story.
Finally, put all of the pages of your book together so that all of your child’s fingers match up and use a hole punch to add a hole to the bottom of the hand. String a ribbon through, tie it off, and you’ve got yourselves a fun little book that is all about your child.
If they’re anything like mine, they’re going to want to reread their book over and over again. When they’re done though, make sure you check out this awesome list of all about me themed books for preschoolers. They’re perfect for kicking off this back to school theme!
