Finishing up the letter D for our alphabet book was actually a lot more fun than I anticipated.
For the lowercase version of the letter, we decided to get a little more creative and ended up with a pretty cool looking dragon that the 4 year old is absolutely in love with!
What started off as a random idea between the 4 year old and myself turned into a simple, but awesome addition to our book.
To make this fun little guy, you’ll need:
- 2 colors of construction paper (we chose green and light blue)
- A sheet of white card stock
- Scissors
- Googly eyes
- Glue
- Red and yellow streamers or tissue paper
The first thing you’re going to want to do is cut out your pieces. When it comes to cutting out the letter, either free hand or just print the letter out and use it as a template.
From the green construction paper, you’ll need to cut out a lowercase letter D, this will make the body of your dragon, and a shape for the head. When cutting out our dragon’s head, we made sure to leave the mouth open so that we could add a little bit of flare at the end :)
From the light blue construction paper (although yes, in this picture it does look white), you’ll need the wing of your dragon and a separate piece for the top of his head if you wish to add it. To make these, we just used a little imagination and figured out what we thought would look best on our dragon and drew them right onto the construction paper before cutting them out.
This is a great way to let your kids get their creative juices flowing! Look at a few dragon pictures with your little ones and let them design their dragon themselves! You’ll be surprised at what they can come up with.
Once you have all of your pieces cut out, it’s time to start assembling your dragon. Glue the green letter D that you just cut out on to your white card stock in the lower left hand corner (this will give you the space you need to add the head of your dragon).
Next, start assembling the head. Glue the green head shape right onto the top portion of your letter and make sure to give him an eye to see out of of!
Glue the piece you created for the top of his on at this time as well.
Attach the wing to the rounded portion of your letter D and set this aside to dry while you grab a little bit of that tissue paper/streamers.
Finally, finish off your fierce looking dragon with a little bit of fire! Nothing is cooler than a fire breathing dragon, am I right?
To create the fire on ours, we simply shaped both colors of streamers so that they looked a little more like fire and glued the red (larger) one down onto the card stock first and followed it with a smaller version of flames made out of yellow streamers.
Once your dragon is fully complete, grab a Do-A-Dot marker and get stamping on the interactive lowercase letter D page!
