We’ve been a little bit behind this year on our holiday crafting but since the 4th of July is one of little man’s favorite holidays (what kid doesn’t love fireworks?!), I wanted to make sure that we got something in before the big day.
When I asked him what he wanted to make for the 4th, his immediate response was a rocket!
With all of the toilet paper rolls that we’ve been saving for crafting lying around, this project seemed like the perfect way to get a little red, white, and blue crafting in while using some of those up :)
This is such an easy craft to make with your kiddos and if they love to paint, they are going to have a blast :)
First thing you’re going to want to do is gather your supplies!
For this project, you’ll need:
- Acrylic craft paint in red, white, and blue
- Toilet paper rolls
- Streamers
- Tape
- Glue
- Paintbrush
- Scissors
- White construction paper (not pictured)
You can’t have a plain brown rocket! What would be the fun in that? So, obviously you’ll need to paint your toilet paper rolls!
Give your kids a paintbrush and some paint and let them go to town. You’ll probably want to put something down to cover the surface that you’re working on as this can get a little messy :)
Once your rocket is painted however you like, set it aside to dry. While you’re waiting for that, go ahead and grab your white construction paper and your scissors.
You’ll need to cut out a circle that is a little bit wider in diameter than your toilet paper roll. Grab something to trace around or just freehand it if you want. Once you have your circle cut out, cut a slit from one edge all the way to the middle of the circle.
Now, take your circle and fold the edges over each other to make a cone shape. Tape the edges inside and out down and you have the top of your rocket.
Next, grab your streamers and get ready to decorate the bottom. We chose to have white for the top of the rocket and red and blue for the bottom but you could change that up however you want. To get your streamers ready, decide how long you want them and cut a strip in that length from each color. Take each of those strips and cut them in half lengthwise (leaving them whole made them way too wide to fit into our toilet paper roll).
Once your rockets are dry, use a little bit of glue on the edge of your toilet paper roll and stick the top that you just made right on there. Let that sit long enough for the glue to dry or the top will pop right off.
Finally, use a little bit of tape on the edge of each of your streamers, tape them to the inside of the bottom of your rocket so that you don’t see the tape on the outside and you’re all set! Count down with your little ones and getting ready to blast off :)
