If you’re looking for a fun literacy based resource to use with your students this fall, you’re going to want to grab this printable parts of a pumpkin book!

This printable book requires very little preparation and would be a fantastic way to introduce pumpkin parts to kids before a field trip to the pumpkin patch!

What are the parts of the pumpkin?

Much like apples, pumpkins are one of those fruits that are synonymous with fall.

We see them literally everywhere throughout the fall months and we don’t typically stop to think about all of their various parts, but knowing them can actually help your students understand a little more about a pumpkin’s life cycle and how they grow.

So what are the parts of a pumpkin?

Stem – The stem is pretty obvious as most types of fruit have some type of stem on them. Found on top of the pumpkin, this stem is what is left of the vine after the pumpkin is removed from the plant.

Tendril – The tendrils are one of the parts of the pumpkin plant that may not see on a ripe, picked pumpkin. These thin, curly strands help anchor and support the pumpkin plant as it grows. They grab on to and wrap around anything nearby in an effort to protect the growing plant from being damaged by wind.

Leaf – Just like every other plant, the leaves of a pumpkin plant absorb energy from the sun in order to create food for the plant.

Skin – Also known as the rind, the skin of a pumpkin is the shiny outer layer of the pumpkin. Like other fruits, this layer protects the inside of the pumpkin from things like insects and disease.

Pulp – This is the lighter in color orange flesh on the inside of the pumpkin. Sometimes referred to as the “meat,” this is one of the edible portions of the pumpkin that is used to make our favorite fall treats like pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, and even pumpkin soup.

Fibrous Strands – Found in the center of every pumpkin is a slimy, stringy mess. These goopy strings are known as fibrous strands.

Seeds – Just like every other plant on Earth, pumpkin seeds grow right inside of the fruit itself which can then be used to produce more pumpkins. These are found right in the middle of the pumpkin, surrounded by the gooey mess of fibrous strands.

Blossom End – The blossom end is found on the bottom of the pumpkin and is where the flower, or blossom, of the pumpkin plant once was. After this female flower is pollinated, it dies off and leaves a scarred spot on the bottom of the fruit in its place.

This printable parts of a pumpkin book is the perfect way to introduce your little learners to all of a pumpkin’s various parts while also working on their literacy and fine motor skills at the same time.

You’ll find the download below in pdf format and all you’ll need to do to prep the books for your students is print them off, cut the pages in half, and staple the pages together along the left hand side of each book.

The book cover gives your students the chance to color a pumpkin of their own and the first page gives them a place to write their name and claim their book.

From there, each page has a simple sentence that they can practice reading as well as a picture of a pumpkin with the different pumpkin parts pointed out that they can color however they’d like,
