While Spring is still officially a few days away, we’ve been enjoying almost 80 degree temperatures for a few days now and are absolutely loving it!
With the sun shining, the flowers blooming and the start of a new season, it seemed like the perfect time to get outside and let nature inspire us. And boy did it :) So much so in fact, that it gave us the idea for our next theme unit!
Our bumblebee theme is in full swing and we’re already having so much fun!
One of the very first activities we did after talking about how bumblebees live in hives, was to create a hive of our own.
Of course, ours is made of paper and paint and you won’t find any real bees taking up residence but they were a lot of fun to make and gave us a few extra opportunities to talk about bees and how they live.
To make it even better, we also had the chance to talk more about recycling and reusing things that we would normally just throw away. In this case, bubble wrap! :)
Using a rolling pin, we wrapped the bubble wrap around it and taped it down in a couple of places so that it would fall off, rolled it around in some paint and then rolled it some more on our paper.
The bubble wrap will actually make a pretty cool honeycomb like pattern on your paper and that makes for a perfect opportunity to introduce the hexagon shape and talk about how bees create and use honeycombs.
To finish off your beehive, use the printable template below (after your paint is dry of course) to cut out a bee hive shape. Cut out a small circle from black construction paper for the entrance to the hive and glue it on.
That’s it! Not only do you have an adorable Springtime craft, but now you’ve got a fun new way to paint as well :)
