We’ve spent a lot of time lately working on counting.
This early math skill is critical for preschoolers and necessary before being able to move on to more complex concepts.
It is not however, one of little man’s favorite activities. In fact, he’ll do what he can to avoid it when possible.
For that very reason, I’ve tried to come up with a couple of different ways that we can practice this skill while making it seem like fun for him.
With our C is for Circus theme in full swing and this fun, printable number sequencing banner, it was easy to do just that!
This activity activity works on multiple skills while being super quick and easy to set up!
Whether your preschooler is a counting pro or just learning the ropes, with this number sequencing banner they’ll work on number recognition, number order, and fine motor skills all at the same time but all your child is going to see is how much fun it is.
To set it up, you’ll need:
- Printable circus banner (printable is available below)
- Scissors
- Clothespins
- Ribbon (yarn or string would work as well)
Cut a strip of ribbon that is a couple of feet long and tie the ends to something so that it acts as a type of clothesline.
To make sure that ours was at eye level so that little man could reach, we tied ours to the backs of two kitchen chairs and set them a couple of feet apart.
Lay out your number pennants and have your child find the smallest number first. The printable includes the numbers 1-20 but if your child is not ready for all of them, you could easily use 1-5 or 1-10. Or, if they need a little more of a challenge, try starting with 10 and working your way to 20.
Give them a set of clothespins and have them use those fine motor muscles to pin up their banner in the correct order.
When it’s all said and done, you’ll have a fun circus banner hanging in your house and your child won’t even know that they’ve been working on math :)
