If you have a child with Autism, you know just how important it is to have a routine.
Nicholas thrives on structure. Deviating too far from his normal daily routine almost always results in a meltdown.
Like many other Autistic children, he needs to know what is coming next, he needs to know what to expect.
Since he still can’t really communicate with us yet, explaining our schedule or what will be coming next in our day has been difficult to say the least. He does however, do very well with visual cues.
With this in mind, I’ve created some visual schedules to aid us throughout our day and they have been so amazingly helpful for us that I wanted to share them with you!
This morning routine visual schedule is the one that we use first thing in the morning. It takes Nicholas from getting up in the morning to getting dressed, from eating breakfast to brushing his teeth.
We’ve put this one up in his bathroom, right next to the sink since the bathroom is where most of these tasks will take place and it stays right where he can see it. To make it a little more fun for him, we added a dry erase marker to the schedule and attached it with Velcro.
He loves being to “check” each item off after he finishes it and being able to show him what comes next has made a huge difference in the time it takes us to transition from one task to the next.
This schedule in particular has proven to be one of our best. Early morning is not the time that you want to be fighting an overwhelmed and cranky toddler and with this schedule we’ve cut down on that by a ton!
But enough about that! Let’s get to the sharing huh?
Download one for yourself, add some Velcro and a dry erase marker and try it out!
Enjoy!
