While fall has always conjured images of pumpkin patches and warm apple-filled desserts, it also happens to be football season.
While I’m not a huge football fan myself, my oldest enjoys it so I wanted to find a way to incorporate it into our learning a bit and since he’s been working on mastering skip counting here lately, it seems like the perfect way to bring them together.
With this football skip counting file folder game, you’ll be able to practice counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s with your children until they’ve mastered the concept!
There are, obviously, a number of ways that you could practice skip counting with your child, but if they’re huge football fans, this is a quick and easy way to combine their love of sports with some math practice!
Assembling the Football Skip Counting Game
Like the rest of our file folder games, putting this game together for your own little learners requires only a few supplies.
You’ll need:
- A manila file folder
- Clear contact paper
- Scissors
- Laminator (optional, but highly recommended)
- Velcro dots (optional)
- The football skip counting printable (below)
Print out the included pieces and cut them out.
Run the football helmets and the numbered footballs through your laminator for durability and attach one side of your Velcro dots to the backs of each one.
Attach the cover to the front of your folder and the football field to the inside flaps using some clear contact paper.
If you’re having trouble, try using some double-sided tape to hold the papers down while you lay the contact paper over top.
Have each of the two field pieces line right up to the fold in your folder without actually covering so that it will still close when you’re finished without ruining your game.
When the field is in place, add the opposite Velcro dots to each of the lines along the bottom of the field.
Finally, add one more Velcro dot to the top of your field for your helmet.
Using the Football Skip Counting Game
When the game’s ready to go, lay out the various numbered footballs and choose one of the helmets to start with.
Stick the helmet to the top Velcro dot and have your child sort through the footballs to find the correct numbers for that sequence.
After they’ve mastered one sequence, move onto the next until they have worked on counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s using this fun game!
