Popcorn has always been, and will probably always be, a favorite snack in our house.
The kids love it and we’ve been able to incorporate it into our learning several times with letter practice and even while working on fine motor skills.
This time though, we’re working on our math skills with this popcorn number sense file folder game!
The popcorn bucket is empty, but it can’t be filled with just any old popcorn! Each piece will need to match the number word on the bucket itself!
Assembling the Popcorn Number Sense Game
As with all of our file folder games, you’ll first need to gather up some supplies!
You’ll need:
- A manila file folder
- Scissors
- Laminator
- Clear contact paper
- Velcro dots
- The popcorn number sense printable (below)
Print and cut out the pieces that are included in the printable to begin. This includes both parts of the popcorn bucket, the number word labels, and the individual pieces of popcorn.
Run the pieces of popcorn and the number word labels through your laminator for durability and attach the cover of your game to the front of your folder using some clear contact paper.
Once that’s done, it’s time to make the bucket.
Attach the two parts of the bucket to the inside of your folder using some more contact paper.
QUICK TIP: To ensure that you can still close your folder once your game is put together, line the two parts of the popcorn bucket up next to the fold in your folder but do not cover the fold. You’ll have a slight gap in between the pieces when you’re done, but you’ll be able to close the folder without messing up your game.
Finally, add one side of your Velcro dots to the back of each piece of popcorn and the back of each number word label. Attach the opposite Velcro dots to the inside of your folder. Five at the top of your popcorn bucket and one in the spot for the number word label.
Using the Popcorn Number Sense Game
When it’s all put together, lay the pieces of popcorn out and show your children that all of the pieces have numbers on them.
The pieces of popcorn include the numeral, counting fingers, tally marks, dice, and ten frames.
Place a number word label on the popcorn bucket and have them sort through the various popcorn pieces to find all five pieces of popcorn that match the number on the bucket.
Numbers 1-10 are included in this game so they’ll have plenty to practice!
