Hot cocoa is one of those things that is pretty universally loved by children of all ages.
There’s just something so comforting about a warm cup of cocoa on a cold winter day and as I was making some of our new file folder games, I knew that, with winter coming up, I wanted to find a way to incorporate it somehow.
Fortunately, the perfect opportunity presented itself with this noun and verb sorting file folder game!
Hot cocoa just isn’t ready to drink until you’ve added some marshmallows and that’s exactly what we’re going to do in this game!
Assembling the Hot Cocoa Sorting Game
Putting this noun and verb sorting game together couldn’t be easier!
First, gather up your supplies! You’ll need:
- A manila file folder
- Scissors
- Clear contact paper
- Velcro dots
- Laminator
- The hot cocoa noun/verb sorting printable (below)
Then, start putting your game together by cutting out both hot cocoa mugs and the marshmallows that go with them.
Now, you’ll notice that there are 15 marshmallows included in this set. The first set of five includes nouns, the second set includes verbs, and the final set are left blank. This is so that you can add extra nouns or verbs for your kiddos to practice with as they master the included set.
Just write your nouns or verbs on them and use them as you would the premade ones.
Next, once you have everything cut out, run the various different marshmallows through your laminator and stick a Velcro dot on the back of each one. It doesn’t matter which side of the Velcro that you use as long as you use the same side for all of the marshmallows.
When the marshmallows are ready, use some clear contact paper to attach the cover to the front of your folder and the mugs to the inside flaps of your folder.
Use some double-sided tape to hold these pieces in place while you lay the contact paper over the top if needed.
Finally, finish the game off by sticking the opposite Velcro dots to the top of your cocoa mugs. We added five spots on each, but with the blank marshmallows, you can add as many or as few as you’d like.
Using the Hot Cocoa Sorting Game
After you’ve put the game together, review with your child the difference between a noun and a verb.
Explain to them that with this game, they’ll be adding marshmallows to cups of hot cocoa but that one cup of cocoa is only for nouns. The other is for verbs and they need to sort their marshmallows into the correct cups.
Once they’ve mastered the included set, use the blank marshmallows to add some of your own for additional practice.
