We all want our children to learn to make healthier choices when it comes to the food that they eat and one of the best ways to ensure that that happens is to expose them to those healthier options again and again in many different forms.
If they’ve just done an activity or have played a game like this fruit and vegetable sorting file folder game, for example, chances are that your preschooler will them be super excited to then find these very same items on their plate at snack time.
Of course, once you’re done with this game, you would also have the perfect opportunity to offer some new fruits and vegetables to your little learner so that they can try them out for themselves!
Assembling the Fruits and Vegetable Game
Start by printing and cutting all of the pieces that are included within the download.
When those are cut, you’ll need to gather a few supplies.
- A manila file folder
- Laminator (optional)
- The fruit and vegetable pieces
- Clear contact paper
- Velcro dots
Use some clear contact paper to attach the cover of your game to the front of your folder. If static is causing issues, add some double-sided tape to the back of your cover to hold it in place while you lay the contact paper over top.
Next, use a little bit more contact paper to secure the “Fruits” and “Vegetables” labels to the top of the inside panels of your folder. One on each side.
Then, run your fruit and vegetable pieces through your laminator to give them a little added durability and then stick one side of the Velcro dots to the backs of each of the pieces.
Finally, add the opposite side of the Velcro to the inside of your folder.
All of the fruit and vegetable pieces will fit into a standard file folder, however, you may want to lay them out before you attach the Velcro to determine the best fit.
Using the Fruit and Vegetable Game
When your game is ready to use, talk with your preschooler about the difference between fruits and vegetables.
There are a ton of different books that you could read together on the subject or you could even try your own taste test!
When they’re ready, have them sort through the food pieces and determine whether each one is a fruit or a vegetable and have them add it to the correct side.
