One of our favorite ways to run off some energy and get the kids up and moving is by heading outside for some good old fashioned play.
Unfortunately, we live in the south and late in the summer months we regularly see incredibly high humidity and triple-digit temperatures which makes playing outside a short-lived activity.
So, in the interest of exercise and gross motor development on those steamy days, we have to get creative and find ways to incorporate these things while still enjoying the air conditioning indoors.
We did just that with this swat the bug alphabet game and even added some letter recognition practice in as well.
Whether you’re stuck inside due to rain or the heat, this fun alphabet game will get your kids up, moving, and practicing the letters of the alphabet!
Swat the Alphabet Bug
Setting this game up for your little learners is super easy and can be played just about anywhere as long as you’ve got enough space.
You’ll need:
- The printable set of alphabet bugs (below)
- A new, unused plastic fly swatter
To start, print the alphabet bug cards, cut them out, and run them through your laminator so that they don’t get torn up while you’re playing.
Next, lay all 26 of the alphabet bugs out on the floor, but make sure that you have plenty of room to move and jump around without bumping into anything.
To play, give your child a plastic fly swatter and call out a letter of the alphabet.
Have your child jump to the letter, swat it with their fly swatter, and then pick it up.
Continue on until they’ve been able to identify and swat all of the alphabet bugs.
It won’t take long before they’ve run off some energy and they’ll have even gotten some fun alphabet practice in at the same time!
