Learning the letters of the alphabet is obviously important, but learning the order of the letters is just as important.
Finding words in a dictionary, files on a computer, and even names on list all require that you know alphabetical order.
Now, this is obviously not a skill that most preschoolers and kindergartners need right off the bat, but learning it from the beginning makes it a whole lot easier.
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to make teaching and learning the order of the letters of the alphabet fun for kids this age and today we’ve got one that they are going to love!
With this letter sequencing caterpillar, you’ll be able to practice alphabetical order and even work on your colors while you’re at it!
With all 26 uppercase letters of the alphabet included, this is one super long caterpillar and your little ones are going to love adding each colorful piece!
Setting Up the Letter Sequencing Caterpillar
Set up for this activity is super simple.
Just print the pages out, cut out the pieces of the caterpillar, and run them through your laminator.
To Use
Set out all of the pieces of your caterpillar for your child to sequence and if they are just starting to learn the correct order, set out a copy of our alphabet chart for them as a reference tool as well.
Explain to them that the letters of the alphabet are arranged in a specific order and this alphabet caterpillar has fallen apart.
He obviously needs a bit of help to put himself back together again in the correct order.
Once they understand, have them build their caterpillar, in alphabetical order, using their alphabet chart as a reference as needed.
If you’ve got younger siblings in on the activity, they can use the caterpillar to work on colors, letter recognition, and counting as well!
