While regular matching games are a ton of fun for preschoolers, adding shadows or silhouettes to the mix adds just a little bit of difficulty to the task and helps your child work on their visual discrimination skills. These skills are vital as they start learning to read and this toolbox shadow matching file folder game is such a fun way to practice!
Whether you’re working on a construction theme or even a community helpers unit, this file folder game is the perfect addition!
Toolbox Shadow Matching Game
To make one of your own, attach the included cover to the front of your file folder using clear contact paper. If you’re having trouble, use some double-sided tape between the cover and the folder to hold it in place while you lay the contact paper over top.
Next, cut out the included pieces.
Within this download, you’ll find two shadow mats to make the inside of your toolbox and the colored versions of the tools as well.
Attach the shadow mats to the inside of your file folder as shown above using some more contact paper. Smooth it out as you go along so you don’t wind up with any big air bubbles or creases in your final product.
Cut out and laminate the colored tools. The tools that you’ll find in this set are a hammer, a screwdriver, a wrench, an adjustable wrench, a bolt, a saw, a pencil, a nail, and a nut.
When they’re ready to go, give your toddler or preschooler the tools and the “toolbox” and have them match the colored tools to the correct shadow shapes.
They’ll have so much fun figuring out where each of their tools belongs inside their toolbox that they won’t even realize they’re working on their early math and literacy skills!
