Winter Color Matching File Folder Game
This colorful game is the perfect way to work on colors with your toddler or preschooler and is super easy to put together.
First things first, you’ll need to gather up your supplies. To make a game of your own, you’ll need:
- File folder
- Scissors
- Contact paper
- Velcro dots
- Printable hats and mittens set (below)
- Laminator (optional)
Now, a quick note about the covers for these games. Don’t make the same mistake that I did in thinking that (after I had already started assembling a game or two) I could easily just add the cover once I was finished assembling the game.
The Velcro that you attach to the inside will make the outside bumpy, lumpy, and just plain uncooperative. So, do yourself a favor and learn from my mistake. Attach the cover to the front of your folder using some contact paper BEFORE adding anything to the inside.
Now, back to making the game.
Once you’ve downloaded and printed out the winter color matching game, you’ll need to cut the pieces out and laminate them.
This is especially necessary if you’re making a game with Velcro as standard printer paper isn’t strong enough to hold up to being pulled off of the game. Laminating, either with a laminating machine or contact paper, will give it a little more durability to stand up to little hands.
When your cutting and laminating is done, it’s time to start adding the Velcro.
Personally, I prefer these little Velcro dots as they are so much easier than the tape that you have to measure, cut, and strip the backing off of. These little guys come on a roll and come in a number of different sizes.
To make the game, use some contact paper to adhere the colorful hats to the inside of the file folder. This will be the base that your child will match their colorful mittens to.
When all of our hats have been added to your folder, start adding the Velcro dots to both the folder and the mittens.
For our game, we put 6 hats on each side of the file folder and then added Velcro dots directly underneath of those. The other side of the Velcro was then added to the backs of the mitten pairs.
From there, you’re ready to start matching those colorful winter items!
