While we teach our young children about two-dimensional shapes from an early age, in reality, shapes are all around us each and every day. Teach your preschooler or kindergartner to identify and sort the shapes they find in real life with this fun shape sorting file folder game for kids!

Shape Sorting File Folder Game

Our first game is a fantastic one if you are trying to teach your preschooler or kindergartner the various 2D shapes. Not only are there plenty of shapes to practice sorting, but each of the included shape cards has a picture of an object. Rather than simply picking out the same circle on different cards, your child will actually be able to look at each object (a cracker, a steering wheel, some tortilla chips, etc.) and will need to determine the shape on their own.

This will allow them to make the connection between the objects they see every day and the shapes they are currently learning about.

Now, included in this set are four different types of shapes.

Circles

Squares

Rectangles

Triangles

After you download the printable set, you’ll want to cut out and laminate the shape cards as well as the shape pockets (shown above).

When you attach these pockets to your file folder, you can do so with contact paper or packing tape, although packing tape does hold up a bit better. Just make sure that you leave the top of each pocket open so that your child can insert their shape cards once they’re sorted.

Included in this set, you’ll also find a cover for your file folder game.

I, personally, like to attach these to the front of the file folders with clear contact paper so we can easily tell what each game is as we quickly flip through them.
