The month of October is an exciting one in a preschool classroom.
Everyone’s enjoying the cooler weather and crisper air of the fall season and young children everywhere are excited about the upcoming Halloween holiday.
But the spookiest holiday of the year isn’t the only thing that the month of October has going for it!
There is so much more to learn about and this list of October preschool themes is fantastic place to start!
October Preschool Themes
Spiders, bats, pumpkins, and monsters… They’re not just Halloween costumes!
In fact, they’re just a few of the preschool theme ideas that we’ve got for the month of October!
Pumpkins
You know it’s October when you find yourself surrounded by pumpkins of all shapes, sizes, and colors!
Take a field trip to your local pumpkin patch, dye some pumpkin seeds and add them to a sensory bin, bust out some of your favorite pumpkin books, or take one apart to learn more about the parts of a pumpkin. There are so many great ideas for incorporating a pumpkin theme into your learning!
Spiders
Spiders may look a little creepy, but it’s during this time of year that they really shine!
Grab some spider themed picture books, work on those fine motor skills while using a few pipe cleaners and an egg carton to build some spiders of your own, or learn about the letter S while turning it into a spider!
These hands-on activities are not only a lot of fun, but they’re a great way to really engage and interest your students as well!
Bats
Just like spiders, bats are a staple of the Halloween season!
They’re perfect for introducing your little learners to the concept of nocturnal animals and they make a pretty fun themed unit all on their own!
Fire Safety
Fire safety is such an important concept to cover with your young students and building a theme unit around it is such a fun and easy way to do so.
A theme like this lends itself very well to pretend play making it a ton of hands-on fun for everyone!
Planning ahead? Make sure you check out these preschool theme ideas for November as well!
Halloween
You knew, of course, that a Halloween theme would make this list, right?
It’s probably one of the easiest themes to put together for any preschool teacher thanks to the abundance of amazing resources out there.
There are songs and stories for you to use during circle time, there are free printables and activity packs covering everything from math to literacy, and there are tons of printable crafts, like this Frankenstein sun catcher, that children of all ages are going to love!
Rainforest
With everything else going on in the month of October, it may seem a little weird to add the rainforest to your list of October preschool theme ideas, but it’s actually the perfect time!
National Rainforest Day is observed annually on October 19th and celebrates all of the positive impacts that rainforests have on our planet.
This gives you an incredible opportunity to introduce your preschoolers to habitats and the animals that call them home.
Monsters
When it comes to fall themes, you don’t typically think of monsters, but they can be such a fun way to work on a number of different concepts.
Colors, numbers, patterns…
The possibilities really are endless with a creative theme like this!
Community Helpers – Firefighters
We’ve already covered fire safety on its own, but did you know that the full month of October is observed as fire safety month?
A community helpers theme like this one is one of the best ways to teach your students about the firefighters in their own communities that are there to help them.
