When we first started homeschooling preschool, we decided to give theme units a try and I am so glad that we did.
Out of all of the various things that we’ve tried throughout our homeschooling journey, using theme units is one of the few things that hasn’t changed. They’re just so versatile and you could easily create one for almost anything.
In fact, we’re still coming up with new ones to use with our younger kiddos now.
Now, as we’re experimenting a bit with year-round homeschooling, we’ve been trying to brainstorm a bit to come up with a few ideas for the warmer months and we’ve managed to pull together this list of July preschool themes that are absolutely perfect for the Summer season.
July Preschool Themes
From the red, white, and blue to the sprawling oceans, there are so many fun ways to incorporate a little learning into your Summer days. Whether you’re homeschooling your preschooler yourself or you’re working as a year-round teacher, there’s something on this list for everyone!
Ocean
From little fish to giant sea creatures, imagine all of the things that your preschooler could explore while learning about the various oceans that cover the Earth.
Reptiles
Cold-blooded animals like the various kinds of reptiles generally love the heat, so what better time to start learning all about them than during the Summer months. If nothing else, they would give you the perfect way to add a little science into your preschooler’s day.
Pirates
Sailing on the open seas offers plenty of opportunities for learning. Little ones love reading all about and pretending to be pirates, so you won’t need much to make this theme unit a ton of fun!
Pond Life
What types of plants and animals will you find in a pond? From frogs and bugs to fish and more, a pond life theme unit makes a fantastic science filled addition to your preschool learning.
Forest
Just like learning about the life forms found in a pond, there are so many different ways to learn when it comes to the forest. From various types of trees, flowers, and other plants, to the animals that call these trees their home, your science-loving kiddos are going to have a blast with this one.
4th of July
You knew it was going to make the list, didn’t you? It just wouldn’t be a list of July preschool themes if we didn’t throw in a little patriotic learning! With all things red, white, and blue, children as young as preschool can start learning about the significance of this American holiday.
Community Helpers – Mail Carriers
“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night…” I’m sure you’ve heard it once or twice before, but the old saying rings true. The mail carriers around the country tirelessly work every day to make sure that our mail gets to where it needs to be and with the 1st being National U.S. Postage Stamp Day, July is the perfect month to teach your little ones all about these community helpers and the job that they do.
Cowboys
Not necessarily a completely Summer theme, but the fact that the National Day of the Cowboy is observed on the 4th Saturday in July every year gives us plenty of reason to add it to the list. From roping animals to riding horses, there are so many fantastic ways (dramatic play, yes please!) to incorporate some gross motor activities into a unit like this!
Beach
Whether you’re counting seashells or using shapes to build a sandcastle, the beach provides so many ways to engage and teach your preschooler.
Olympics
Every four years the Summer Olympics are held in a different city around the world. What better time to work a little geography or a little extra physical education into your day by recreating the Olympics in your own backyard.
