Building a strong foundation of early math skills is essential to your child’s academic success as they progress through their school years and number sense is, by far, one of the most important.
Seeing as how it is the foundation that all later, more difficult, math skills will be built upon, it makes sense to make absolutely sure that your child has mastered the skill before attempting to move on.
Fortunately, there are plenty of activities that you can put together to help your child not only recognize numbers but also understand what they stand for and what various numbers look like in quantities.
These printable number sense puzzles are the perfect example!
Printable Number Sense Puzzles
They are super easy to put together and make a fantastic center activity or busy bag!
This printable set includes numbers 1-10 in various forms. Each puzzle contains seven pieces with the center of each being the numeral.
The connecting pieces include a domino, fingers to count, tally marks, ten frames, dots on dice, and the number word.
To prepare the puzzles, just print, cut, and play. Of course, you may want to laminate each of the puzzles for durability.
To use, simply have your child start with the white center piece of a puzzle and have them identify the number. Next, have them move through the rest of the pieces to find the corresponding pieces with the same number and add them to their puzzle.
To make these easier for younger children, sort the puzzle pieces with like numbers together so that they start with the seven pieces belonging to a single puzzle and have them identify the number in each of its forms as they put the pieces together.
For older children, try having them sort through the pieces on their own or mix pieces of the same color together and have them sort through them to find the correct piece of their puzzle.
However you use them, by the time your child has worked their way through all 10 puzzles, they should have a much better understanding of numbers and their various forms.
