When it comes to file folder games, I love putting together ones that work on various different skills. This printable button sorting game, for instance, not only helps your preschooler or kindergartner work on their early math skills through sorting and counting, it also allows them to work on both color and shape recognition. On top of that, they’ll also have the chance to see the names of different shapes written out and will be able to begin associating those words with the actual shape.
Now, in our house, we LOVE file folder games.
They make reinforcing various concepts super simple and they’re so easy to put together. The best part? Once they’re put together, we can use them over and over again.
In fact, the preschooler is now using a few of the games that I originally put together a few years ago for her older brother.
And this game? It couldn’t be easier!
The printable download, which you’ll find below, contains six labeled jars for the buttons to go in, and buttons in those same six shapes, in four different colors.
To make this button sorting game, you’ll first need to print and cut each of the pieces out.
When your pieces are cut, grab a manilla file folder and use some contact paper to stick the jars onto the folder. Make sure that you completely cover the jars so that little fingers can’t pick at them and pull them up. Three jars to each side of the open folder fit perfectly for us.
Then, just laminate the buttons to make them a bit more durable and you’re ready to play.
I often tape a small plastic zippered bag to the back of the file folder to make holding the pieces for each game a lot easier and with the pieces of this game, you can easily work a little counting, shape or color recognition practice into your preschooler’s day.
