When you think about winter, there are always a few things that come to mind: the ice, the cold, the cocoa, and of course, the snowmen.

This is especially true if you ask a child about the winter season.

As soon as they hear the word snow, they want to try to build a snowman.

I can’t really say that I can blame them as it is a lot of fun.

And that is exactly why we built a few of these frozen friends into our newest digital activity: Sight Word Snowmen!

Sight Word Practice

Sight words are those words that appear frequently enough in our reading and writing that you should simply be able to recognize them on sight.

These are words like a, and, the, and to.

Knowing them on sight not only improves your child’s confidence in their reading abilities, but it can help to make them faster, more fluent readers as well.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re easy for kids to master.

Some children really struggle with sight words because they don’t always follow the different phonetic rules that they’re learning.

For this reason, the best way that you can do for a child that is struggling with sight words is use repetition.

As the saying goes, practice makes perfect.

But around here, we also aim to make sure that that practice is fun because if it isn’t, you’re going to have a really hard time keeping your kids focused and engaged.

Sight Word Snowmen

With winter upon us, it seemed like the perfect time to add a few snowmen to our sight word practice!

While it’s not quite the same as building a real snowman, here in the south it’s the next best thing as we typically don’t see a lot of snow and the kids love seeing them pop up on the screen!

And that sight word practice?

Yep!  That’s in there as well!

This digital sight word snowmen activity gives your students the opportunity to work on 25 different sight words from the Fry 1st 100 list, including:

• make

• said
• see
• the
• was
• when
• you
• like
• if
• have
• now
• so
• are
• many
• by
• called
• at
• first

They’ll not only be able to see the words, but they’ll be able to hear the word that they’re looking for as well by simply clicking on the sound icon located at the top of each slide.

And like our other digital activities, this one is available on all three big digital platforms – Boom Learning, Google Slides, and Seesaw – making it perfect for any home or classroom setting.

On the Boom cards and Google Slides versions, students will listen to the word and then click on the correct snowman.

On Seesaw, they’ll use their drawing tools to circle the correct snowman after listening to the word.

All 25 sight words are included on all 3 platforms, however, due to Seesaw’s page limit, this activity is broken down into 2 sets on that platform.
