One of my biggest challenges from my classroom teaching days was teaching times tables. By the time my fourth graders entered my classroom they were expected to know (and be proficient at) their times tables.
That, however, was not always the case. I spent weeks and months playing flash card games and passing out daily timed tests. There was a lot of frustration from both myself and the students who couldn’t do it.
I began to loathe that part of my school day, and I’m sure the kids did, as well. I left the classroom almost twenty years ago and thought those days were behind me.
Little did I know, my own children would struggle with those same math facts in my homeschool. Eventually, they all learned their times tables, but it didn’t come without hours of timed tests and flash card drills. Back before Pinterest, I had no idea how to make it more fun for them!
I do now, though! And, I’m here to equip you to make learning the times tables a little less frustrating for your own students with these spin and color multiplication boards.
What You’ll Need:
- printable multiplication boards (below)
- crayons or colored pencils
- one paper clip
To Use:
Print out the multiplication boards below. There is one board for each fact from 2-10. Choose the board that corresponds with the fact you’re currently teaching or one that your student needs to review.
Using the paper clip as a spinner, have your child spin the spinner. Take the number the spinner stops on and multiply it by the number featured on the worksheet.
Choose a color and color a square with that product. I like my kids to choose a different color for each product (for a total of ten colors), but you could have yours use all one color or even make a pattern if they’d like.
Either way, this is a great way to practice multiplication facts without the drudgery of flash cards and the pressure of timed tests.
