Getting your children into the kitchen with you and teaching them to cook can be a fun and educational experience for the whole family, but teaching them to clean up the messes they make while they’re in there isn’t nearly as easy as making them, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t still make it fun!
Take these Minion cookies for example. My kiddos have always been huge fans of the Despicable Me movies. The Minions especially are always a huge hit with my 3-year-old, and with Despicable Me 3 hitting theaters on June 30, we had to find a way to celebrate.
The thing about these cookies though, is that they can get a bit messy, especially if you have little helpers. Don’t let that discourage you though! These cookies are adorable, super easy to put together, and the perfect snack to munch on while watching the Minions and the rest of the gang on their latest PG-rated adventure!
First up, you’re going to want to gather up all of your Minion making supplies. You’ll need:
- Round cookies
- Yellow candy melts
- White candy melts
- Blue and black gel coloring or edible food markers
- New Bounty Despicable Me 3 prints paper towels
To get started, grab your cookies and cut the two sides off (when lying flat) so that you end up with two flat sides as shown below. When those are cut, round the four corners that you end up with so there is no point.
Now, it’s the kids’ turn!
Melt the chocolate melts in 15-20 second intervals in the microwave and once they’re completely melted, have your little helpers dip one-half of their cookie into the yellow chocolate melts.
Once covered, place it on a plate and either wait for the chocolate to harden on its own or pop it into the freezer for a minute or two to speed things up.
When the yellow has hardened, have your child repeat the process with the other side of their cookie and the white chocolate.
Are you ready for the fun part? Now it’s time to turn them into Minions!
You’ll need to either pull out some blue and black gel colors and a new paintbrush or a few edible food markers so that your kiddos can add all of the details that will turn this simple, two-toned cookie into a mischievous little Minion.
We decided to go ahead and try out the gel colors because we thought it might give us a little more of the denim look that we were going for on the overalls and we weren’t disappointed!
If using gel colors, just remember to start with a brand new paint brush.
Use your colors to paint on your Minion’s overalls, his goggles, and any other details that you’d like!
For the eye (or eyes) of your Minion, add a little dot of white chocolate on your Minion’s face and let it harden before adding your details.
Now, as I said before, these can get a bit messy. What with the crumbs from cutting the cookies, the melted chocolate, the colors, there’s bound to be some mess.
