When it comes to Thanksgiving, the turkey is the star of the show!
So, of course, it makes sense to add them to your learning while you’re prepping for the holiday.
Fortunately, there are a ton of fun ways to do that and this printable set of five little turkey puppets is just one of them!
Five Little Turkeys Poem and Puppets
Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Learning about some of the Thanksgiving traditions can be so much fun with this simple poem and puppet packet.
Children can use the poem and puppets to develop language, math, memory, comprehension and social skills. Poems with props can also help build a child’s imagination.
Within this download, you’ll find the five little turkeys poem and five numbered turkeys that you can use as props!
Just print out the poem and the puppets, laminate the turkey puppets for durability, and then hot glue them to colorful craft sticks and you are ready to inspire young minds.
Using the Five Little Turkeys to Building Language Skills
This fun printable is an easy way to help children learn about rhyming and repetition as well as build vocabulary.
This can be easily incorporated into a language lesson, circle time session or reading activities. Simply use the puppets to help perform the poem and then let the children have fun reenacting what was modeled.
For those students who are working to build their language, give them a chance to become familiar with the words of the poem and then start reciting the poem but leave out certain main words such as “turkey,” “door,” tree,” etc.
For those students who may be learning about action words have them come up with different actions for the turkeys to do.
Provide the puppets in a center for the children to use during free choice or make believe play. This gives the children a chance to recite and act out the poem individually.
You can also provide construction paper and other craft materials to make a back drop or other props to go with the poem.
Using the Five Little Turkeys to Build Math Skills
Poems can be very helpful in teaching number identification, number order and number words.
5 Little Turkeys can help build numerical order as well as number identification as each turkey puppet has a number on them.
The children can practice identifying the number and as they advance in this skill, placing the numbers in order is another skill you can introduce and practice.
As you recite the poem, have the children hold the the turkeys. At first have them in number order. After practicing a few times, place the children who are holding the puppets out of order and let them work cooperatively to get the turkeys in the right order again.
To extend the activity into an independent task have the children create a number line using the puppets. The children can create this by pushing the turkeys into a Styrofoam block.
You can also work on number identification by hiding the turkeys around the room and asking the children to find a number 1 -5.
