Summer is almost here, but the learning doesn’t have to stop. Summer is actually a great time to focus on some skills that may need a little extra work without the formality of traditional lessons.
Math facts tended to be something we worked on all year long when my kids were younger. During the school year, we had math books, flashcards, and workbooks.
Summer, though, is a great time to pull out puzzles and other hands-on activities so that reviewing skills doesn’t seem so academic.
These printable addition puzzles are perfect for summer math practice!
These math puzzles are super easy to use and there’s not a lot of prep time involved.
Supplies needed for the Patriotic Addition Puzzles:
- the printable addition puzzles (below)
- card stock
- laminator
- scissors
- small stickers (optional)
To Use:
Print out the puzzles that are linked below. I suggest printing them on cardstock because it’s sturdier than printer paper. I also suggest laminating them for durability.
Cut apart each of the puzzles. Put the sums (the large top piece of each puzzle) in one pile and the addends (the smaller numbered pieces on the bottom) in another.
Have your child choose a sum and set it aside. Then, have them choose two numbers from the addends pile to complete the puzzle. For instance, for the sum of 4, your child should choose 0 and 4, 1 and 3, or 2 and 2.
The beauty of these puzzles is that you can focus on just a few sums at a time or you can challenge your child with the whole set.
To challenge your older children, teach them (or remind them of) the properties of addition. The commutative property states that the order of the addends doesn’t matter. 3+1=4 as does 1+3. The additive identity property states that any number plus zero equals itself. 5+0=5
