Learning to read sight words can be a tricky thing for young learners. The more exposure they get in learning their words, the better their reading fluency becomes. These color by code quilt images are a fun way to develop beginning sounds and sight words in one fun activity!
To prepare
These pages are easy to prepare and use. There are two versions included in the set, version 1 includes the words as mystery words – where kids need to use the key to find the corresponding letters to reveal the word. I find that this version is a great way to get kids practicing their beginning sounds! The second version includes the sight words they need to find (I sometimes use these with my ESL kids as it is an easier version for them and they only need to focus on finding and reading the words).
What you’ll need:
- Printer and A4 paper
- Crayons / coloring pencils
- Activity pages (below)
Print as many sheets you need for the number of students in your class. I also like to print two pages on one A4 sheet of paper so I save on printing and that way I have the same set of puzzles to give each student one page each. The sight words used are: like, yellow, she, blue, little, this, and, and they.

These are very easy to setup and play! I get the students working in groups and sometimes I will add a fun element like a competition to get the kids excited about finding their words, reading them and coloring them.
I print out the key (totally optional) I use it with my ESL kids. The pictures for the letters are very easy to identify so your kiddos shouldn’t have a problem finding the letters for the beginning sounds. After they do this, I get them to write the words underneath. After I check the words, I get them to search and color them on the quilt.
