Up until now, coming up with things to make for each of the letters in our alphabet book has been fairly easy. There are plenty of things that start with the letter S or even the letter M, but the letters X through Z? That’s a different story!
But don’t you worry! After a quick brainstorming session with our household’s resident crafters (the preschooler and kindergartner) and some time spent looking through pictures of things that start with these letters, we came up with a few ideas that we loved!
Take the uppercase letter X for example, there aren’t many things that start with the letter X that would be easily recognizable to a preschooler, but take that letter X, add a few brightly colored pieces of construction paper, and you wind up with a fun and easy xylophone craft that your kiddos are going to love!
Now, you could obviously use any colors that you like for this particular craft, but there is just something about making a rainbow xylophone that is so much fun!
To make a letter X xylophone of your own, you’ll need:
- Construction paper (black for the letter X and whatever colors you would like for the bars of your xylophone)
- A sheet of white card stock
- Scissors
- Glue
The first step, as always, is to cut out your letter.
Whether you’re tracing a letter onto you construction paper or just free handing it, you’ll want to make sure that your letter X is tall enough to hold all of your bars.
Next, you’re going to want to cut strips of construction paper for the bars.
Again, you can pick and choose whatever colors you’d like. Make your xylophone a single color or mix it up and make a rainbow :)
Start off by cutting your strips so that they are the same length and width.
Once all of your strips are cut, decide which one you’d like to start with and the order in which you want them placed and start trimming.
Cut each strip to be a bit shorter than the one before it, by about an inch or so.
When you’re ready to start assembling your xylophone craft, have your child glue their letter X down onto their sheet of card stock.
Next, starting with the longest strip and finishing with the shortest, have your child glue their colored strips down horizontally onto their letter X.
We added a little bit of a challenge while making our craft and mixed up all of the strips once they were cut and the preschooler had a lot of fun looking through them to find the longest one. After she glued that one down, we went right back to our pile of paper strips and searched again for the longest one.
Of course, you could easily change it up and have your child search for the next strip by going in order of the colors of the rainbow!
However you make it, finish it off with the uppercase letter X page from the bundle of interactive alphabet pages and add them both to your alphabet book.
