If you’ve been a reader for any length of time, you may recognize the newest addition to our preschool alphabet book.
We originally made a letter S snake back when we first started tot school and he quickly became one of the preschooler’s favorite crafts.
So much so that when we were trying to decide what to make out of the uppercase letter S to add to our book now, the only idea the little guy wanted to entertain was recreating the snake.
That was actually fine by me since I knew this was a favorite of his and I want his alphabet book project to be a fun thing for him to look back at time and time again once it’s completely finished.
Their were, of course, a few changes from our original design as he is older now and has gotten much better at using a pair of scissors, but for the most part, he is still that lovable little snake that the preschooler loved the first time around.
As always, start by gathering up some basic supplies. For the snake, you’ll need:
- A sheet of white card stock
- Green, red, orange, and yellow construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue
- Googly eyes
From the green, you’ll need to cut out the main pieces of your snake. The pieces that you’ll need from this color are a large uppercase letter S and a small rounded triangular shape for the head of your snake.
From the red, cut out a long, skinny rectangular shape and then add a small V-shaped slit into one end for the tongue.
With the other colors, get creative! These will be used for the designs that your snake’s skin will have so use your imagination!
For our snake, the preschooler decided that he wanted to make a pattern so we cut out both rectangle “stripes” and some small triangles in two different colors so that he could make the pattern that he wanted.
To assemble, start by gluing your uppercase letter S directly onto your sheet of card stock and adding the rounded shape for the head onto the top tip of your letter.
Of course, he is going to need a set of eyes and that super cool snake-like tongue that we cut out earlier.
To add the tongue, we just lifted up the very tip of the snake’s head off of the paper, slipped it under, and glued it into place.
Finally, it was time to add the rest of the pieces. For our snake, the little guy decided on a pattern of orange stripes and yellow triangles.
We swapped a little bit towards the head of the snake because, according to the preschooler, his head needs to be special, but it was fun to see him incorporate a few of those early math skills that he’s been learning into our alphabet book as well.
Finish it off with the printable uppercase letter S page and watch your newest alphabet craft slither right into your book!
