Have your kids headed back to school already this year? Schools in our area started the year off way back on the first of the month, but just in case your summer isn’t over quite yet, this is just a friendly reminder that it’s right around the corner!
For the beginning of a new school year, I am always on the lookout for some fun new activities to help ease us into the year. Coming out of the lazy days of summer and filling them up with a routine is a hard adjustment to make each year, even once you’re an adult, so anything quick and simple that can make that adjustment period just a little bit easier is a win in my book!
This back to school chalkboard themed matching game is a perfect example of that. This fun and easy memory matching game is a great way to work on those early math skills, concentration, and problem solving skills, but for the most part, the kids won’t even realize that they’re learning anything at all because they’ll be too busy playing the game!
Getting the pieces ready to use couldn’t be simpler. Just download the free printable file, which you’ll find below, print two copies of each page of pieces onto card stock (to make them a little more durable and to make them so that they’re not see through), and play!
If you’re playing with a toddler as well or if your kids really end up loving the game, you may want to also laminate the pieces so they’ll hold up a bit longer but, of course, this isn’t a necessary step.
When all put together, you’ll have 24 cards (12 matches total) that are perfect for the back to school season. Everything from a backpack full of supplies to a globe and an apple for the teacher :)
If your kids are smaller, practice putting together a few of the matches first before trying to make it a game so they know what they’re looking for. If they’re older, simply set it up like your normal memory game, flipping all of the cards over so that you can’t see the pictures and try your hand and making a match. The person with the most matches at the end of the game wins!
The kids will get a little extra practice at taking turns and you’ll have a fun, easy to set up game that’ll have them learning without even realizing it!
